As a child a couple names always stuck with me through my life in sports; Paul Bryant, Keith Jackson, John Wooden, Joe Paterno, and Bobby Bowden. I believe they all felt extremely strong about their classy reputation. I have been a Miami Hurricane fan my entire life, so I am no stranger to controversy, especially in the recent months. Paying players, abortions for prostitutes, Pell Grant, million dollar boats, and lots of other allegations have surrounded The U! Miami will always be the bad guys and I am sure they will keep that reputation.
The college sports world has been turned upside down with the child abuse cases surfacing in the last two months. Earlier this year I heard grumbling of a child abuse scandal at Penn state but I shrugged it off. In August when the Shapiro case broke, I thought this could be the worst since the pony express. After doing some research the allegations were not as bad as Yahoo made them out to be, and it soon calmed down. When November rolled around I thought “When will Ohio State and Miami forfeit the bowl games?” I was way off.
I was in Las Vegas for work when I woke up to the news on Twitter that Jerry Sandusky was accused of raping young boys and I quickly said ” NO WAY would Joe Paterno let this happen”. Now two months removed it is clear that it did happen and it happened on more than one occasion. Even more surprising is that it happened at more than one school.
Since when as a society have we put sports on a pedestal so high that children’s safety and well being take a back seat? They are actively looking for a coach. They continued to play football. They left Joe Paterno’s statue up. The students went to his door to show support. I have no children but I do have nieces and nephews, and at no cost would I ever put their well being in jeopardy. Penn State has put children in jeopardy for more than 10 years. I believe that Joe Paterno and others associated with the university hid the situation for years. How is it possible that they could let this go on? Have we lost site that this is amateur sports, and the end result is supposed to be a degree of higher learning, or is it about the all mighty dollar and winning. If child rape is what it takes to win, I will lose every time and so will society. How can anyone support Joe Paterno? I just don’t buy he didn’t know because I have a job as well and I know it would spread like wild fire. Who failed at the highest level, the NCAA or the University of Penn State? If it was Joe Paterno’s son or daughter would it have changed the outcome? You bet it would have. They would have fixed the situation and he would be a hero. I know Joe didn’t physically do it but in my opinion he harbored a monster in Jerry Sandusky.
Now I ask myself, are steroids as bad as we thought? Was the Tattoo episode at The Ohio State really that bad? Are my beloved Miami Hurricanes that bad? No they are not. I am not justifying any of those schools or people, but I am afraid that we will soon forget what terrible things happened this year at a place we looked at as the blue collar school of America.
